Why I Social Dance: A Deep Reflection
I’ve been contemplating why social dancing has become such an important aspect of my life. I often find myself visualizing myself on the dance floor, experimenting with moves and music. This has led me to ask a fundamental question: Why do I love to social dance?
The Importance of Understanding Why We Dance
Understanding why we love to dance is more significant than it might initially seem. By exploring this question, we can gain insights into how dance benefits us. When we become conscious of these benefits, we can improve and progress at a more rapid pace.
I’ve spoken to many artists and realized the importance of understanding why we love to social dance. Knowing this helps us as students and dancers to recognize what truly matters. Without this understanding, we may find ourselves getting caught up in things that don’t contribute to our growth or joy. For instance, we might start caring more about how we look rather than how we feel, take critiques too personally, or even get entangled in unnecessary drama.
I think there is a lack of emphasis on understanding why we dance and the specific benefits that come from dancing. If we can break down our desire and go deeper than just saying, “it’s addicting” or “it’s my therapy,” then we can consciously partake in creating a social dancing community that is truly connecting and life-enhancing.
By discovering why we love to dance, we can consciously shape our relationship with social dancing. We can identify how it benefits us, decide what we should focus on, and determine what distractions to avoid. This awareness allows us to enhance our experience and continue to derive the benefits of social dancing.
The Role of Creativity
The first thing that comes to mind when I ask myself why I dance is creativity.
I now understand that creativity is a recurring theme in my life. I seek opportunities to hone my creativity because I believe it is the next evolutionary container for our souls. As a spiritual healer, I understand the role that disease plays in our lives—it is there to awaken us, whether it be physical or mental. Disease pushes us to understand ourselves and awaken to our potential by understanding the role we played in its creation and then learning how to heal from it.
But now, I believe there will come a point where we require other experiences for our evolution—experiences that help us understand our power as creators. The next vehicle for our evolution will be creativity, whether through dance or any other endeavor.
Co-Creation with the Soul
I’ve realized that when you engage in a creative endeavor, you enter into a co-creative process with the soul. The soul uses this opportunity to create and manifest in the physical world. There have been many times when I feel overtaken by a higher force, allowing me to do things I never thought possible. I can move with the music in complete harmony, come up with new moves, replicate what I’ve seen on social media without prior training, hit every beat without knowing the song beforehand, and my overall enjoyment of the dance reaches a level of ecstasy.
These are just a few examples of how I enter into co-creation with my soul. As time has passed, I’ve been able to do this more consciously and intentionally. Certain circumstances must align beforehand, but when everything falls into place, dancing becomes pure joy. This connection with my soul and the creative process is what first comes to mind when I think about why I dance.
The Flow State and Spiritual Insights
By entering this flow state, I gain insights into the problems in my life. I’ve been able to visualize my future, understand why I came into this world loving to dance, and discover my purpose in the social dancing scene, or the dance scene in general. Through this flow state, I gain the information necessary to continue evolving.
For me, dance is primarily a spiritual matter, and moving forward, I want that to be known. If this perspective is not a significant part of the social consciousness right now, it is my mission to bring it to life.
I’ve realized, after interviewing various artists—even great ones—that there is a lack of emphasis on understanding why we dance and the specific benefits that come from dancing. If we can break down our desire and go deeper than just saying, “it’s addicting” or “it’s my therapy,” then we can consciously partake in creating a social dancing community that is truly connecting and life-enhancing.
The Importance of Vulnerability
Another important reason I dance is vulnerability.
Dance creates a space for vulnerability, allowing me to feel my emotions and transmute them into movement. It gives me the ability to be seen without making a big fuss about it. Dance is a one-to-one interaction with another individual—a conversation where many things can be revealed.
Beautiful connections have been made on the dance floor, and these connections are developed through vulnerability—being willing to take risks, to mess up, to show who you are, to experiment, and to continue expressing yourself. These elements make dance vulnerable. The more you dance, the more you get to know yourself and gain a sense of importance in the world. When you express yourself vulnerably and are met with vulnerability in return, as is typical in dance, you begin to understand what it means to feel loved. Love is the ability to acknowledge someone and recognize them as another aspect of yourself—another universe created from the same essence that we all contain within us. The more you dance, the more you connect and realize that what you have to say matters.
The Power of Connection
Connection is another crucial reason I dance.
Connection is essential to the human condition and our mental health. It ties closely to vulnerability because vulnerability precedes connection. When you connect with another individual, you synchronize and become one. While our culture places a high emphasis on sex for this connection, it can also be achieved on the dance floor. Through connection, you learn what it means to become a part of another human being. Many relationship dynamics can be observed and understood by watching the dance floor. I’ve learned so much about connecting with both women and men through social dancing. The dynamic between the masculine and feminine is particularly prominent in this context, and I’ve used the social dance floor to understand the underlying components of human connection.
When I dance and connect with an individual, I experience a place of novelty and creation. I co-create with my partner, and it feels like the meeting of two worlds—two planets colliding and exchanging information, building something together. Through dance, I’ve gained insights into the personalities, pasts, likes/dislikes, desires, and insecurities of others. All of this can be read on the dance floor when you truly connect.
Embracing the Feminine Energy
Through dance, I connect with the feminine energy and experience the joy that comes from that connection. This energy is essential to my ability to create in both my personal life and business. By connecting with my inner feminine and identifying any blocks that hinder connection in my day-to-day relationships, I’ve gained valuable insights. Being able to connect with women in a platonic way has greatly benefited my life.
The Future of Social Dancing
As I reflect on my journey with social dancing, I see this post as just the beginning of something much larger—a movement towards fostering a much better social dancing community. I envision a future where dance becomes an integral part of our lives, not just as a hobby or a social activity, but as a powerful tool for personal and collective transformation.
In this future, social dancing will be more than just a series of steps and routines; it will be a space where we connect deeply with ourselves, others, and the music. It will enhance our lives, allowing us to express our true selves, explore our creativity, and cultivate meaningful relationships. Dance will be a place of growth, healing, and empowerment, where we can shed the layers that no longer serve us and step into the fullness of who we are.
This vision is not just a dream—it’s a call to action. Together, we can build a social dancing community that prioritizes connection, authenticity, and transformation. Let’s move towards a place where every dance is an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to connect more deeply with the world around us.
Conclusion: Embracing the Dance of Life
In reflecting on why I dance, I’ve come to understand that social dancing is more than just movement to music—it’s a profound expression of creativity, vulnerability, and connection. It’s a spiritual practice that allows me to tap into deeper layers of myself and the world around me.
As I continue to explore this journey, I invite you to consider your own relationship with dance or any other creative pursuit. What draws you to it? How does it shape your life? By understanding these motivations, we can all move through life with greater awareness, purpose, and joy.
